FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and
is used to upload and download files from
the web. Uploading a file is when you send
something from your computer to a remote server
(such as uploading a web site) while downloading
is acquiring a file from a remote server to
your own computer.

We recommend the use of WS_FTP95LE.

-
The FTP program will
first open up to the Session Properties
screen. You will see a number of Profile
Names that are set by default. These can
be safely deleted.
Click on New, then fill in the information
given to you for your specific domain
(see diagram). Enter the Host Name, Username
and Password in lower case letters. For
Host Type, use Automatic detect. You may
also want to check Save Password. Click
OK.
- The first time you open the program it
will look something like this. The Local
System (left side) is a tree view of your
computer. The Remote System (right side)
is a view of your space on the server. On
the Remote System the program will open
up to your personal user web file,
not the web site file. To navigate up, double
click the green arrows. To navigate down
(open a folder), double click the folder.
------------------------- Business web sites
for an additional step. -------------------------
Double click on the web
folder.
In
this folder you will see a file named index.html
which we have placed there for you. This
is the default file for your web site sometimes
called the home page or index page.
If you type your web site name in a browser
(http://www.mydomain.com)
you will see this file. You will notice
that in the above address the file name
was not referenced. When there is no file
name, the server automatically displays
the index.html page for that folder/directory.
When you design your site, you should create
your own index.html to replace the file
we have put in your folder. Then, when you
upload your file named index.html, it will
replace the file that we put there for you.
If you want to keep the file that was originally
on the server, you should rename it (eg
oldindex.html).
- On the Local System (left side), navigate
to the folder that contains the files that
you want to upload to the server.
- From the bar at the bottom of the screen
(see step #2), select Options. The following
screen will be displayed. Click on Save
Current Directories as Connection Directories,
then click on OK. The next time you open
up the FTP program, it will open up to these
directories.

- To transfer a file, highlight the file
by clicking on it and press the arrow pointing
to the right. If the transfer is successful,
the file will appear on the right and the
message in the lower left corner of the
screen will read 226 Transfer complete.
You can upload multiple files by using the
CTRL or Shift keys.
- On the remote server, you can create folders/directories
just like you can on your computer. To create
a folder, click on MkDir on the right side
of the screen. A window will pop up to enter
the name of the folder. Type the name of
the folder and press OK. The folder will
appear on the remote side of the screen.
- Once you have uploaded all of your files
to the server, open a web browser (Internet
Explorer or Netscape) and check your web
site to make sure that all of the files
appear and that your site looks the way
you want it to.
